Cultivation

Cineraria as a potted plant

Pericallis x hybrida (Scheidw.) B. Nord.

Cultivation of Pericallis x hybrida as a potted plant requires strict adherence to the temperature regime (13–17°C) for flower bud initiation and ensuring high substrate aeration.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Cineraria, where this is mentioned in the description.

The optimal temperature range for the growth and development of Cineraria is 13–17°C, as temperatures above 20–25°C lead to etiolated shoots and failure to flower. Flower bud initiation in modern hybrids occurs upon the formation of 8–10 leaves, making temperature control a determining factor for commercial marketing deadlines.

The plant is highly sensitive to water management and substrate composition: waterlogging rapidly triggers root rot, while a pH above 6.5 causes interveinal chlorosis. In commercial production, it is preferable to use fertilizers with low phosphorus content and to avoid ammoniacal forms of nitrogen in favor of calcium-based ones.

Physiologically, the crop is programmed to complete its life cycle after an 8–12 week flowering period, and it is therefore treated as a single-use commodity. Modern breeding of Grandiflora and Multiflora types allows for a significant increase in plant density within production areas.
