Cultivation

Phalaenopsis pot culture

Phalaenopsis Bl.

Phalaenopsis cultivation in pots is based on the simulation of epiphytic conditions, requiring the use of inert substrates and ensuring high aeration for the root system with velamen.

In the reference 220 varieties crop Moth Orchid, where this is mentioned in the description.

Phalaenopsis breeding for pot production is focused on plant compactness and habit control, in contrast to breeding for cut flowers. The substrate serves exclusively to fix the plant and provide air access, so only slowly decomposing materials, such as bark, coconut chips, or expanded clay, are used.

A critical condition for cultivation is maintaining gas exchange of the roots, which possess velamen. Constant overwatering leads to their degradation, so transparent containers with side holes are used. Nutrition is carried out exclusively by low-concentration fertigation, as the root system is extremely sensitive to substrate salinity.
