The classification of Cannabis sativa varieties is based on division into ecotypes, such as Central Russian and Southern, which differ in their response to photoperiod. Varieties of the Central Russian ecotype have a growing season of 80 to 120 days, while for southern forms, this figure is 140–160 days.

In agronomic practice, instead of using maturity groups, specific growing season duration in days is used. Harvesting dates are determined based on a visual assessment of development stages: at 60–70% seed maturity for two-phase harvesting, or at the onset of shedding of the lower seeds in the panicles upon reaching full maturity.
