In proso millet, the maturity group is determined by the number of days from emergence to full maturity. According to state variety testing methodologies, varieties are divided into four main groups: early-maturing (up to 100 days), mid-early (101–110 days), mid-maturing (111–120 days), and late-maturing (121–130 days).

The crop's biological requirement for heat is estimated by the sum of active temperatures, which ranges from 1500°С for early-maturing varieties to over 1600°С for mid-late varieties. Under conditions of heat deficiency, these values may increase, making the choice of maturity group a decisive factor in preventing the formation of shriveled grain during autumn frosts.

The use of different maturity groups allows for the optimization of harvesting equipment utilization and the implementation of differentiated sowing dates. Taking into account the biological characteristics of panicle maturation, which proceeds from the apex to the base, is essential for accurately determining the start of two-phase harvesting during the wax maturity stage.
