Pea Maturity Group

Pisum sativum L.

The maturity group of peas is determined by the length of the growing season from mass emergence to ripening and is the primary criterion for selecting a cultivar and planning harvesting operations.

In the reference 779 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

For field peas, a gradation is adopted ranging from early-maturing (up to 100 days) to late-maturing (121–130 days or more). In vegetable peas, where harvesting is conducted at the stage of technical maturity, early cultivars (45–60 days), mid-season (60–80 days), and late cultivars (over 80 days) are distinguished. Under field conditions, exact timelines vary depending on the region and climate; therefore, cultivars are often evaluated relative to a standard adopted in the specific zone.

The use of different maturity groups ensures a staggered production method, allowing for the uniform utilization of processing plant capacities. The maturity group determines seeding rates, plant growth rates, and climate adaptation strategies, helping to avoid crop losses from frosts or unfavorable conditions during the ripening period.
