Maturity group — Red clover

Trifolium pratense L.

Classification of red clover based on the number of stem internodes, which determines the plant's developmental rhythm and its capacity for one or two cuts per season.

The maturity group of red clover is determined by the approval sheaf method, counting the number of internodes on 100 stems selected from 50 points in the field. Early-maturing varieties have an average of 5–7 internodes, late-maturing varieties have at least 8, and mid-maturing varieties occupy an intermediate position.

This trait determines the crop management technology. Early-maturing varieties allow for two full cuts and primarily include spring biotypes. Late-maturing varieties are single-cut and contain spring, intermediate, and winter biotypes. Using varieties from different maturity groups makes it possible to extend the harvesting period by 30–35 days.
