Tomato planting density

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato planting density determines the balance between the productivity of an individual plant and yield per unit area. This parameter is directly dependent on the plant morphotype, pruning method, and engineering conditions of cultivation.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The optimal density for tomatoes is determined by the plant morphotype. For indeterminate varieties, sparse schemes are used (70–80 cm between plants with a row spacing of 1 m), whereas determinate varieties are planted more densely, with an interval of 30–60 cm. With higher density, the total yield may increase due to the number of plants, but the productivity of each individual bush decreases, and the risk of disease development due to poor aeration increases.

Unlike field crops, tomato density is closely linked to individual plant management: an agronomist regulates the nutrition area not only through the planting scheme but also by the number of stems per plant. Recommended values vary from 1.6 plants per square meter in intensive greenhouses to 4.5 plants in open fields, depending on the variety type and cultivation conditions.
