Rapeseed stand density

Brassica napus var. napus

The optimal stand density of rapeseed ensures a balance between the development of each plant and the efficient use of space. For winter rapeseed, the target density is 40–70 plants/m², and for spring rapeseed, it is 80–100 plants/m² at the time of harvest.

In the reference 30 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Winter rapeseed requires the formation of 6–10 leaves before winter, with a root collar diameter of 6–8 mm and a growing point height of no more than 2–3 cm. Excessive density in the autumn leads to the growing point being elevated above the soil and the formation of a weak root system, which reduces the crop's winter hardiness.

Rapeseed possesses a high compensatory capacity, especially hybrids, which effectively utilize the growing area through active branching. Under conditions of excessive density, crops are more prone to lodging and the development of fungal diseases due to a deteriorating microclimate, which reduces seed weight per plant.
