Apple tree planting density is strictly tied to the vigor of the scion-rootstock combination. The use of dwarfing rootstocks, such as M9, allows for an increase in planting density from the traditional 250 trees per hectare to 2,500–6,660 trees in modern intensive and super-intensive orchards.

At high planting densities, trellis support systems and specific training types, such as the slender spindle, are essential for controlling tree dimensions. The limiting factor in intensive orchards is the light regime of the crown: exceeding the optimal density reduces illumination, impairs fruit quality, and worsens the phytosanitary condition of the orchard.
