The primary causal agent of melon scab is the fungus Cladosporium cucumerinum, also known as the pathogen responsible for scab or olive spot of cucurbits. Several studies have confirmed the role of the species Cladosporium tenuissimum in the development of necrotic spots on the leaf blades and fruits of the crop.
On melon leaves, the disease manifests as small, angular, light-brown spots, which may eventually develop a ragged appearance due to the dropping out of necrotic tissue. Under conditions of high humidity, an olive-gray or brown mold forms on the affected areas. Fruit infection is accompanied by the appearance of spots and subsequent deformation, which reduces the market quality of the produce.
Unlike tomato breeding, the classification of pathogen races and letter designations for resistance genes are not used in melon variety descriptions. Breeding work for this crop is primarily focused on overcoming other pathogens, and resistance to scab is not a target trait when evaluating varietal characteristics.
