The causal agent of leaf mold is the fungus Passalora fulva. The disease manifests on leaves as light yellow spots, followed by the development of a velvety mold on the underside of the leaf, which changes color from grayish-white to brown. In severe cases, tissue necrosis occurs, leading to foliage drying and abscission, as well as the development of black, sunken spots on the fruit.
Genetic control of resistance is mediated by a series of dominant Cf genes (e.g., Cf-1, Cf-2, Cf-4, Cf-5, Cf-6, Cf-9, Cf-19) introgressed from wild relatives, including Solanum habrochaites. The defense mechanism is based on the recognition of pathogen effectors by receptor proteins, which initiates a hypersensitive response. Due to the pathogen's ability to overcome monogenic resistance, breeding efforts prioritize the pyramiding of multiple Cf genes.
