Container-grown Lagerstroemia

Dwarf and semi-dwarf cultivars reaching heights of up to 1–2 meters, which possess a compact habit and a suitable root system, are most suitable for growing Lagerstroemia in containers. Plants require containers with a volume of 20–30 liters with high-quality drainage, as the crop is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, which triggers root rot. The use of terracotta containers accelerates water evaporation, which increases the need for regular watering.

The container method ensures the mobility of the crop, allowing it to be moved into sheltered areas when there is a risk of frost. The optimal winter maintenance regime includes cool temperatures in the range of 5–10 °C with limited watering. Plants require regular repotting every two years to stimulate development and full sun exposure, which is necessary for abundant flowering in the period from July to September.
