Container Cultivation of Lantana

In container cultivation, Lantana camara is grown as an annual or a container plant that requires overwintering indoors at a temperature of 12–16°C. Dwarf or trailing cultivars are used for planting, and systematic pinching of apical buds and pruning of lateral shoots are applied to control the habit.

The plant's vigorous root system requires containers with a diameter of 20 to 50 cm with mandatory effective drainage to prevent root rot. The crop is extremely light-loving and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, as well as regular fertilization during the growing season with limited nitrogen to stimulate flowering.

Lantana is sensitive to changes in conditions when moved from indoors to the outdoors, which can lead to delayed flowering. Due to the physiological characteristics of the species, constant monitoring for pests, especially whitefly, is necessary under container conditions.
