Fodder Purpose — Fodder Beet

Beta vulgaris Fodder Beet Group

Fodder beet is a specialized crop that provides animal diets with easily digestible sugars (6–9%) and high biomass optimized for digestibility (87–93%). It is used as an additive to increase the energy value of the diet and stimulate milk production in dairy cattle.

In the reference 111 varieties crop Mangelwurzel, where this is mentioned in the description.

The energy value of fodder beet is determined by its high sucrose content, which has a pronounced lactogenic effect. The crop contains a significant amount of fiber, making it a dietary component that requires supplementation with roughage for normal fermentation processes in the animals' rumen. For fodder purposes, the entire plant is productively used, including the tops, which are fed fresh or as silage.

Unlike sugar beet, breeding for fodder purposes is focused not on maximum sugar yield, but on total biomass and high digestibility of organic matter. The crop is intended for feeding in raw form without prior industrial processing. Adaptation to fodder use has influenced root morphology: in specialized varieties, up to two-thirds of the mass protrudes above the soil surface, which significantly simplifies the mechanical harvesting process.

In livestock diets, fodder beet serves as a key tool for correcting carbohydrate metabolism, preventing the development of ketosis during sugar deficiency combined with excess protein. Using this crop allows for the standardization of energy supply to animals and improves the overall digestibility of roughage during the winter period.
