Bean root rots

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

A complex disease of common bean caused by soil-borne fungi of the genera Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Thielaviopsis, and Aphanomyces.

In the reference 15 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agents of bean root rots are of polyetiological nature. The main complex of pathogens includes Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium spp., Thielaviopsis basicola, and Aphanomyces spp. Resistance to these pathogens is often associated with morphological plant traits, such as the presence of anthocyanins in seeds and the hypocotyl, rather than with specific resistance genes.

Symptoms of Fusarium wilt manifest as yellowing of the lower leaves and root rot, sometimes accompanied by a white or pinkish fungal growth. Rhizoctonia root rot is characterized by sunken lesions that may girdle the stem, while Aphanomyces root rot leads to softening of stem tissues above the soil line and the formation of a constriction, causing plant death. Black root rot, caused by Thielaviopsis basicola, manifests as browning of the roots and plant wilting.
