Lolium perenne L.
Tillering in perennial ryegrass is a key biological trait that determines sward formation, stand density, and the crop's ability to recover after mowing or grazing.
In the reference 5 varieties crop Perennial ryegrass, where this is mentioned in the description.
Perennial ryegrass is a loosely tufted grass with high shoot formation dynamics. In the year of sowing, the plant is capable of forming up to 600 tillers per plant, and for a mature stand, a density of 40–60 tillers per dm² is considered typical. In breeding, this parameter is assessed by counting the number of vegetative and generative tillers per plant or unit area.
Intensive tillering ensures the formation of wear-resistant cover and rapid regeneration of the stand after intensive use. High tillering contributes to the species' competitive ability in grass mixtures and determines green mass productivity. However, the shallow depth of the tillering node (8–13 mm) combined with high tiller density can increase the crop's susceptibility to winterkill during snowless winters.
