Triticale tillering

Triticale tillering is a biometric index of crop structure, measured by the number of stems per plant. In breeding, a distinction is made between total tillering and productive tillering, which determines the number of stems with a fully developed spike.

To assess the productive tillering of triticale, a scale is used, according to which a low level is considered to be 1–2 productive stems per plant, medium is 3–4 stems, and high is 5 or more stems. This trait correlates closely with the overall plant productivity, with a correlation coefficient of 0.805.

This indicator is characterized by high variability, depending on meteorological conditions, especially during the autumn period for winter forms, and seeding density. Triticale, particularly spring forms, demonstrate the most complete expression of tillering potential in sparse stands, which must be taken into account when calculating seeding rates.
