Downy mildew — cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (White Cabbage Group)

A fungal disease caused by the oomycete Hyaloperonospora brassicae, affecting cabbage at all stages of development, and particularly dangerous for seedlings.

The pathogen is Hyaloperonospora brassicae, which possesses a high host specialization of the f. brassicae form. The pathogen is characterized by pathotypic diversity and the presence of physiological races capable of overcoming the resistance of various crop genotypes.

On seedlings, the disease manifests as yellowish spots on cotyledons and a whitish or grayish sporulation coating on the underside of the leaf, which often leads to plant death. On mature plants, the disease causes chlorosis and leaf necrosis, and on stored heads, it leads to spotting that promotes the development of secondary rots.

The genetic resistance of cabbage is usually polygenic in nature and is associated with quantitative trait loci, such as the Pp523 locus mapped on chromosome C8. Additionally, NLR-type gene clusters responsible for pathogen recognition are involved in the plant's defense mechanisms.
