The causative agent of the disease is a specialized pathogen, Peronospora manshurica, which exclusively infects soybean. More than 30 physiological races of this oomycete are known, which possess a high ability to adapt to the resistance genes used in commercial cultivars of the crop.
The disease manifests in two forms. The systemic form develops following seed transmission and is characterized by general plant stunting, organ deformation, and the appearance of chlorotic spots. The local form manifests from the flowering stage as angular light-green spots that eventually turn brown; simultaneously, sporulation forms on the underside of the leaf. Oospores of the pathogen can accumulate on the inner pod walls and the surface of seeds, giving them a dull appearance.
