The subterranean organ of the crocus is a corm, the formation and development of which determine the ornamental qualities and the rate of vegetative propagation of a cultivar.

The crocus corm forms at the apex of the previous year's organ in the axils of the leaves of the upper shoot nodes and is covered by dry scale-like leaves. Morphological characteristics, such as shape, size, and scale structure, serve as important diagnostic criteria in breeding and species identification.

For the majority of cultivated varieties, a corm diameter in the range of 2–3 cm is typical. The capacity for vegetative propagation is evaluated by the coefficient of cormel formation. In this context, deep planting (8–10 cm) promotes the enlargement of the main organ, whereas shallow planting stimulates active formation of cormels.

The condition of the corm directly influences flowering: large specimens are capable of developing up to five flower stalks. When the soil is depleted or the clump becomes excessively overgrown, the size of the flowers decreases. To maintain the quality of planting material, the absence of rot and damage is critical, as is adherence to planting schedules to ensure the full development of the root system.
