Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch

Double-flowering in Begonia elatior is a varietal trait caused by the metamorphosis of stamens into additional petals in male flowers. Evaluation of this trait is qualitative and based on the visual degree to which the center of the flower is filled with petals.

In Begonia elatior, double-flowering is characteristic only of male flowers, while female flowers usually retain a simple structure. Visual assessment of double-flowering takes into account the formation of decorative shapes, such as rose-like or camellia-like. For the full development of a flower with a high degree of double-flowering, it is critical to maintain a stable temperature regime during the budding period, ensuring a temperature level of no less than 20 °C.
