Origin of the cultivar — Begonia elatior

Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch

Begonia elatior is a group of interspecific hybrids resulting from crosses between Begonia socotrana and cultivars of Begonia x tuberhybrida.

The genetic history of this crop is based on the hybridization of diploid Begonia socotrana with tetraploid forms of tuberous begonia. Due to the triploidy of the initial hybrids, the plants are characterized by sterility, making vegetative propagation by cuttings the primary method for maintaining varietal purity.

The origin determines the key biological requirements of the crop. From Begonia socotrana, the hybrids inherited a photoperiodic response that influences flowering. The breeding history, aimed at overcoming the natural susceptibility of early hybrids to pathogens, has established the modern level of cultivar resistance to powdery mildew and other fungal diseases.
