Cultivation

Cuttage of Begonia × elatior

Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch

Vegetative propagation of the hybrid requires strict adherence to timing in late winter and early spring to ensure adequate vegetative growth prior to flowering.

In the reference 11 varieties crop Elatior Begonia, where this is mentioned in the description.

For the propagation of Begonia × elatior, apical stem cuttings 8–10 cm long are used, preferably with two leaves and a pair of axillary buds. Optimal substrates are light peat-based mixtures with the addition of sand or perlite. The rooting process is most effective when bottom heat is provided and high air humidity is maintained under greenhouse conditions.

The choice of the propagation period is critical: work carried out after spring often results in underdeveloped specimens that enter the flowering phase prematurely. Cuttings of this crop are prone to rotting under excessive watering, thus requiring monitoring of substrate moisture. After successful rooting, pinching is necessary to form a lush habit, which naturally delays the onset of flowering.
