Plum propagation by cuttings

Prunus L.

Vegetative propagation of plum based on the capacity of softwood and root cuttings for rhizogenesis, which is critically dependent on the genotype of the cultivar, the developmental stage of the shoot, and environmental conditions.

In the reference 24 varieties crop Plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

The rooting ability of plum via softwood cuttings varies significantly depending on the genotype: cultivars such as Pamyat Timiryazeva or Skorospelka krasnaya show high rooting potential, while Renklod kolkhozny roots much more poorly. The optimal time for harvesting is during the active growth phase in the second half of June or early July, when the base of the shoot begins to lignify and change color. An important technological requirement is the maintenance of high air humidity, which in industrial settings is achieved through artificial mist systems.

Unlike pome fruit crops, plum rhizogenesis is extremely sensitive to the physiological state of the shoot, and delays in cutting harvesting sharply reduce survival rates. Industrial propagation is focused on specifically selected clonal rootstocks, such as OP 23-23 or VSL 2, which are capable of intensive root formation. Additionally, propagation by root cuttings is used, which are harvested in early spring or autumn by digging up roots at a distance of up to one meter from the trunk of the mother plant.
