Variety traits

Plum tolerance

Prunus L.

The ability of plum cultivars to maintain productivity and fruit market quality when infected with Plum pox virus (PPV), despite the presence of the pathogen in plant tissues.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

Tolerance in plum is a form of resistance to the pathogen in which the tree remains a carrier of the Plum pox virus but does not exhibit a significant decrease in yield. Unlike resistance, the plant does not block the development of the pathogen, which makes tolerant cultivars potential sources of infection for susceptible orchards.

The assessment of tolerance is based on comparing data on the presence of the virus in tissues, detected by ELISA or RT-PCR methods, with the intensity of phenotypic manifestations. According to international descriptors, high tolerance is characterized by the absence of fruit deformation and spotting in infected trees, while low tolerance is accompanied by pronounced symptoms of the disease and loss of market quality.
