Plum scion

Prunus L.

A plum scion is a varietal plant part in the form of a cutting or bud that requires high biological compatibility with rootstocks from the genus Prunus.

In the reference 19 varieties crop Plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

To ensure graft survival, the plum scion is harvested during dormancy before the onset of sap flow and stored at a temperature of 0...+7°C. An important condition for success is the use of healthy one-year-old shoots, as the presence of diseases or damage increases the risk of tissue rejection.

The plum shows specific compatibility within the genus Prunus, demonstrating the best graft union results with plum, cherry plum, sloe, and damson. Compatibility with apricot is used to adjust growth vigor and improve drought tolerance, although it requires control of rootstock suckers, which can suppress the scion.

The plum cambium is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature, requiring strict adherence to timing for grafting operations. Using a high graft at a height of 30–40 cm on certain rootstocks helps reduce the intensity of unwanted root sucker formation.
