Solanum lycopersicum L.
A tomato scion is the aerial part of the plant (cultivar or hybrid) that determines fruit market quality and yield. In commercial vegetable production, it is selected for compatibility with rootstocks that provide resistance to soil-borne pathogens and abiotic stresses.
In the reference 30 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.
The technology for producing grafted tomato plants, known as 'Japanese grafting,' requires high precision: the stem diameters of the scion and rootstock should be 1.6–1.8 mm. Cuts made at an angle of 30–45 degrees are secured with a silicone clip, after which the plants are placed in a chamber with high humidity (95–98%) for 6–8 days to allow the vascular bundles to fuse.
The scion has a significant influence on plant physiology and fruit quality, including sugar content and acidity. Since tomato grafting is intraspecific or interspecific within the genus Solanum, the risks of tissue incompatibility are minimal; however, the selection of a 'scion-rootstock' pair requires consideration of specific production goals.
