Scion

A scion is the aerial part of a plant in the form of a cutting or bud, taken from a cultivar for grafting onto a rootstock. It is the scion that determines the varietal characteristics of the future plant, such as flavor, yield, and fruit quality.

The scion represents the upper part of a grafted plant, responsible for the development of aerial organs and the quality of the resulting harvest. In agronomy, it is used as the carrier of genetic traits of a specific cultivar, including disease resistance and the morphological features of the fruit.

The cultivation efficiency of a scion directly depends on its compatibility with the rootstock, which serves as the root system and the base of the trunk. The interaction between these parts determines the overall adaptation of the crop to soil conditions, growth vigor, winter hardiness, and the longevity of the entire plant.

Assessing the condition of a grafted crop requires considering the properties of both components, as the rootstock determines size and growth vigor, while the scion provides varietal value. When caring for such plants, it is critical to control the emergence of rootstock suckers below the graft union to prevent the suppression of the cultural scion.
