Cultivation
Prunus domestica L.
A domestic plum scion is a cultivated variety grafted onto a Prunus rootstock to manage tree vigor, precocity, and adaptability. The crop is characterized by high scion-rootstock compatibility and the widespread use of clonal rootstocks in intensive horticulture.
In the reference 13 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.
Domestic plum exhibits a high grafting success rate, with optimal results achieved when using rootstocks within the Prunus genus, such as myrobalan or bullace. The choice of rootstock determines the tree's habit, longevity, adaptation to specific soil conditions, and the time to reach bearing age.
While the scion fully retains the varietal characteristics of the fruit, the rootstock exerts a significant physiological influence, including the spatial distribution of the root system and the intensity of root sucker formation. Managing these processes, particularly when using specialized clonal rootstocks, is the foundation of modern nursery production for establishing intensive plum orchards.
