Pepper Grafting

Capsicum annuum L.

An agrotechnical practice in which peppers are grafted onto solanaceous rootstocks, most commonly tomato, to provide protection against soil-borne pathogens and increase tolerance to abiotic stresses.

For pepper grafting, solanaceous hybrids or tomato cultivars with vigorous root systems are used as rootstocks. This enables the plant to more effectively cope with soil salinity, low temperatures, and infestation by nematodes, Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, and bacterial wilt.

When performing the procedure, a key factor is matching the components by age and stem growth rates to ensure their compatibility. After performing cleft grafting, splice grafting, or tongue approach grafting, the plants require high humidity for 7–10 days to ensure successful tissue union.
