Apple Scion

Malus Mill.

An apple scion is the varietal part of a tree whose characteristics—vigor, yield, and fruit quality—are strictly determined by its interaction with the rootstock.

In the reference 23 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.

In intensive apple cultivation, rootstock is used as a tool to manage the scion habit, allowing for the regulation of planting density and the time to reach bearing age. The scion and rootstock function as a single system, where the scion's physiological processes, including photosynthetic activity and resistance to abiotic stresses, depend on the properties of the root system.

Fruit parameters, such as size, color, firmness, and sugar content, are also significantly adjusted by the rootstock. Grafting apples onto unrelated pome crops, such as rowan or hawthorn, is limited in professional production due to risks of physiological incompatibility, reduced longevity, and fruit size reduction.

Technologically, an apple scion is characterized by a distinct morphological feature in the form of a swelling at the graft union with the rootstock. In commercial nursery production, the choice of grafting method, whether bench grafting in winter or summer budding, directly affects the yield of high-quality planting material.
