Apple rootstock

Malus Mill.

Apple rootstocks are used to control tree vigor, precocity, and productivity. The choice between seedling and vegetatively propagated clonal rootstocks determines canopy architecture, time to onset of fruiting, and the need for support systems for the root structure.

In the reference 211 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.

Seedling rootstocks, derived from seeds of cultivars like Antonovka obyknovennaya or wild apple (Malus sylvestris), are used for apple trees to produce long-lived, vigorous trees. Alternatively, clonal rootstocks, propagated by cuttings or layering, allow for the classification of trees by their degree of dwarfing and the regulation of their growth.

The influence of the rootstock on the apple tree manifests in the redistribution of photosynthates: on clonal rootstocks, up to 60% of assimilates are directed toward crop development, accelerating fruiting to the 2nd–4th year of life. Because clonal rootstocks possess a shallow fibrous root system, trees grafted on them require support.

The apple rootstock system is characterized by extensive breeding efforts, including the M, MM, SK, and Geneva series. Selecting a specific rootstock-scion combination allows agronomists to vary tree planting density in the orchard, taking into account soil and climatic conditions and resistance to pathogens.
