The rootstock was obtained in 1976 as a result of crossing Ottawa 3 and Robusta 5 cultivars. In terms of vigor, trees on this rootstock are similar to M.26 or slightly exceed it. The plants are noted for very high precocity, beginning to produce a significant yield from the second year after planting.
The rootstock possesses high resistance to fire blight and Phytophthora root rot, exhibits tolerance to soil fatigue, and good winter hardiness. At the same time, it is susceptible to woolly apple aphid and can be sensitive to viruses, therefore requiring the use of virus-free material for grafting.
Trees on this rootstock have a stronger graft union compared to M.9; however, due to high yields at a young age, the trees require additional support in the form of a trellis or stake.
