M-9 is a dwarfing rootstock on which the height of grafted trees usually does not exceed 2.5–2.7 m, which is 25–40% of the size of trees on standard seedling rootstocks. The rootstock promotes early entry into fruiting, which occurs in the 2nd–3rd year after planting.
The plant has resistance to Phytophthora root rot, but is susceptible to fire blight and woolly apple aphid. Due to the shallow and brittle root system, trees require permanent support in the form of trellises or stakes throughout their entire life. The rootstock is characterized by low winter hardiness and requires special care in regions with severe winters.
