It is widely used in intensive orcharding, providing grafted varieties with high productivity and accelerated entry into fruiting. Compared to the base M 9 clone, this rootstock is characterized by increased vigor and slightly greater growth strength.
The root system of the rootstock is superficial and fragile, which necessitates the use of stationary supports throughout the tree's life cycle. The plant is demanding regarding moisture and performs poorly on both light sandy and heavy clay soils. Regarding pathogens, M 9 EMLA shows resistance to Phytophthora root rot but has high susceptibility to fire blight.
