The M 9 Typ 337 rootstock belongs to the M9 group and provides low tree vigor, with tree height typically reaching 2.5–3 meters. The root system is shallow and brittle, which makes trees dependent on a permanent support structure throughout their life.
Trees grafted onto this rootstock begin to bear fruit in the 2–3rd year after planting. The rootstock promotes good fruit sizing and coloration, and can also accelerate ripening by 3–5 days.
The plant is demanding of soil conditions: it performs poorly in both light sandy soils without irrigation and heavy clay soils. Due to the shallow root system, the rootstock requires regular irrigation. Root cold hardiness is approximately -10°C, therefore hilling is required in conditions of snowless winters.
