The rootstock was obtained as a result of a joint breeding program of the East Malling Research Station and the John Innes Horticultural Institution as a hybrid of Northern Spy and Merton 793 varieties. Trees on this rootstock reach 80–100% of the size of trees on seedling rootstocks, reaching a height of 5–6 meters, and begin to bear fruit in the 4–5 year.
This rootstock is characterized by high resistance to woolly apple aphid, root rot, and collar rot. Due to its well-developed root system, it possesses excellent anchorage and does not require permanent support. It tolerates heavy clay, dry sandy, and calcareous soils well, which makes it sought after in commercial and amateur horticulture.
