The tree reaches 4–5 meters in height with a wide crown 6–10 meters in diameter. The branches are long and flexible, often with a weeping growth habit. Leaves are ovate or elliptical, 8–10 cm long, deep green in summer, and turn bright orange or reddish shades in autumn.

Flowering occurs in May. The flowers are snow-white, large for the species, up to 4–5 cm in diameter, and gathered in inflorescences. The fruits are spherical, about 3 cm in diameter, bright yellow with a reddish tinge. They are edible but have a sour and tart taste, so they are used primarily for processing.

The plant possesses high winter hardiness (USDA zone 2) and is undemanding regarding soils, preferring fertile and well-drained loams. It is used in ornamental landscaping and in nursery production as a rootstock for cultivated apple varieties.
