A tree or shrub with a height of 3 to 10 meters and a wide, often asymmetrical crown 4–8 meters wide. The plant's branches are often provided with thorns. The fruits are small, 2–4 cm in diameter, have a spherical or round-ovate shape and a yellow-green color, sometimes with a red blush.
The fruits ripen in August–September, have a sour, often astringent and bitter taste, and are considered inedible when fresh. The species is characterized by high winter hardiness down to –34 °C, drought tolerance, and wind resistance, demonstrating significant variability of individual traits due to seed propagation.
