The M 26 rootstock provides trees with higher anchorage and a better-developed root system compared to the M 9 rootstock; however, due to the high yield of grafted plants, they require the installation of supports. The rootstock possesses satisfactory winter hardiness, relative resistance to scab, and propagates well vegetatively.
Trees grafted onto this rootstock begin to bear fruit in the 3rd–4th year. The influence of M 26 on the scion can lead to reduced calcium accumulation in the fruit, which sometimes negatively affects their shelf life. The use of this rootstock in nurseries allows for the cultivation of compact trees of various apple varieties.
