The M 1 rootstock was obtained by crossing Northern Spy and is one of the parent components for the MM-106 rootstock. Trees grafted on this rootstock grow 20–25% less vigorously than those on seedling rootstocks, approaching M 7 in terms of growth vigor.
The root system of the rootstock is well-developed. M 1 possesses moderate resistance to soil waterlogging, which allows it to be used on less permeable soils; however, it tolerates drought poorly. The rootstock is characterized by an early start of the growing season and a long vegetation period.
