The rootstock was developed through a breeding program by Cornell University and the USDA-ARS. It is intended exclusively for grafting apple varieties or for use as an interstem.
Tree vigor on this rootstock is 60–65% of the size on vigorous analogs, which is comparable to the characteristics of the M.7 rootstock. The plant requires mandatory trellising or staking due to insufficient trunk rigidity, especially in wet soils.
The rootstock possesses high resistance to fire blight, Phytophthora crown rot, and woolly apple aphid, and also exhibits tolerance to replant disease. It is characterized by high productivity, precocity, and good winter hardiness.
