In apple trees, the fertilization process is strictly determined by genetic incompatibility managed by S-genotypes. For successful fruit set, the pollinator's pollen must carry alleles different from those present in the pistil of the main variety. Full compatibility is ensured when both alleles do not match, while partial compatibility is observed when one common allele is present.
An effective pollinator variety must ensure synchronization of flowering with the main variety. When selecting, it is important to consider that triploid varieties, such as Mutsu, have low pollen viability and cannot serve as pollinators themselves. For stable pollination in commercial orchards, varieties are planted in rows at a distance of no more than 20–30 meters, often using crabapple trees as universal pollinators.
