Apricot is characterized by gametophytic self-incompatibility controlled by the S-locus, although a number of cultivars are capable of self-fertility as a result of mutations in the S-locus or the influence of the M-locus. Cultivars are distributed into Compatibility Incompatibility Groups (CIGs), within which cross-pollination is impossible. For effective fruiting, it is necessary not only to select cultivars from different groups but also to ensure strict coincidence of their flowering periods, which occur very early in this crop.

Modern agronomic practice has revised the historical misconception regarding universal apricot self-fertility, pointing to the necessity of cross-pollination to increase yield quality and quantity. In cases of uncertainty regarding the genetic compatibility of new cultivars, the use of molecular-genetic typing of S-alleles is recommended. When there is insufficient space for planting full-sized pollinator cultivars, grafting several cultivars into the canopy of a single tree is practiced.
