A pollinizer variety is a plant intended for cross-pollination of the main variety, which is necessary for fruit set in most self-infertile or partially self-fertile fruit and berry crops. In the absence of a suitable pollinizer, a tree may bloom profusely, but the formation of a full yield becomes impossible.
Pollination efficiency depends on biological compatibility, including the overlap of flowering periods of the main variety and the pollinizer, as well as genetic compatibility and the pollinizer's ability to produce viable pollen in sufficient quantity. Flowering periods must overlap by at least 5–7 days.
The placement of pollinizers in an orchard requires consideration of the distance, which usually does not exceed 15–40 meters, as well as adherence to planting schemes in rows or blocks. To improve pollination quality, it is important to avoid planting other species between cross-pollinating crops and to ensure there are no competitor plants in the row middles that could distract insects.
