In pears, the self-incompatibility mechanism is controlled by a single S-locus and an S-RNase-dependent process that inhibits the growth of pollen tubes from genetically identical pollen. Unlike other fruit crops, complete cross-incompatibility is common in pears, where specific pairs of varieties, such as Williams and Louise Bonne, are incapable of fertilizing each other.
Selecting a pollinator requires considering biological compatibility and synchronizing flowering periods by at least 70%. The low attractiveness of pear blossoms to insects due to their specific scent makes the pollination process critically dependent on the presence of 2–3 compatible varieties in the orchard, accounting for 10–15% of the plantings.
Some varieties, such as Conference, are capable of parthenocarpy; however, even in these cases, cross-pollination significantly improves yield indicators and fruit quality. Failure to consider the genetic compatibility of varieties leads to widespread blossom drop, where no fruit set occurs despite abundant flowering.
