Hazel is a monoecious plant with pronounced dichogamy, where male and female flowers on the same specimen mature at different times. Most hazelnut cultivars are self-incompatible or partially self-compatible; therefore, for successful pollination, several pollinator cultivars with different flowering periods must be planted in the orchard.

When selecting pollinators, pollen viability is considered, which in some cultivars may be as low as 4–6%, as well as the presence of incompatibility alleles. Wild hazel is often used as a universal pollinator, as it flowers earlier than cultivated varieties and has an extended flowering period, which protects the crop against spring frosts.

Hazelnut pollination occurs via wind at very early stages, when air temperatures reach +10...+12 °С. Given the high dependence of this process on weather conditions and the anemophilous method of pollen dispersal, it is recommended to follow a planting scheme with a 1:5 ratio of pollinators to main cultivars.
