Common hazel is characterized by sporophytic self-incompatibility, which causes most cultivars to be self-infertile. This necessitates the careful selection of pollinators to ensure fruit set and prevent the formation of empty nuts.

For scientific purposes, this trait is evaluated through controlled pollination, fluorescence microscopy of pollen tubes, and fruit set assessment, where values of 75–90% under self-pollination indicate the presence of self-compatibility.
