The assessment of hazel vigor is based on measuring shoot height in comparison with the population mean. Forms with a height exceeding the mean value by two standard deviations are considered vigorous. Under natural population conditions in the North-West Caucasus, threshold values are less than 2.97 m for forms with restricted growth and 11.13 m or more for vigorous specimens.
This indicator dictates agronomic practices and the choice of planting pattern, as vigorous forms require larger feeding areas and are used primarily in afforestation or as rootstocks. For plantations, plants with restricted growth are preferred, and vigor management is carried out through pruning and the removal of old trunks to maintain bush productivity and prevent competition for light.
