The York cultivar was developed at Oregon State University as a specialized pollinator for hazelnut cultivars Yamhill, Dorris, Wepster, and McDonald. The plant is characterized by moderate growth vigor and a globular crown shape, which promotes effective wind pollination. The tree is approximately 30% smaller in size than the Barcelona cultivar.
Phenologically, the cultivar belongs to the mid-season of pollen shedding. It possesses a high level of genetic resistance to the fungal disease eastern filbert blight, as well as to the hazelnut big bud mite. The kernel content in the nuts is approximately 46% by weight.
The York cultivar is incompatible for cross-pollination with cultivars McDonald, Casina, Delta, and Hall's Giant.
